The builders of Rostov-on-Don bypass road (Aksay bypass construction address) proceeded to ground stabilization to enable further works on building a new section of M-4 Don Highway.
The section runs through the flood-plains of the rivers of Aksay, Don and Cherkasskaya on 19 of 35.5 kilometers of the fifth stage of bypass construction. The territory here is regularly flooded every spring, and therefore, reinforcement of foundation soils is badly needed.
Special soil stabilization works have already been included in the project.
First of all, soft soils will be replaced in the flood-plains at a depth of one and a half to four meters throughout 19 kilometers.
Secondly, the reinforcement with a special geosynthetic material will be performed at the stage of filling the embankment, so that it does not deform during floods. Also, the plan provides for the reinforcement using gabions and Reno mattresses.
Moreover, to stabilize soil and increase its strength and physical characteristics, we plan to use an inorganic binder. This will minimize deformations on the roadway.
At the same time, the bridge spans across the Don River are being prepared for erection. They will be erected in two technological stages. The work is underway on auxiliary structures for the over-water length in order to carry out subsequently the conveying and rear assembly with a launch. There are plans to complete it in 2021. The elements of the span structure will be enlarged on a berth in the alignment of the supports, and then, with the help of pushing devices, it will be moved to the design position.
The fifth phase includes the construction of three complicated transport interchanges with ramps, cross-overs, and pedestrian crossings — at the intersection with the existing M-4 Don Highway (1,072th km) and Drive to Novocherkassk (1,038th km), Aksay – Bolshoy Log – Novocherkassk (1,051th km) roads, as well as small bridges over Monastyrskoye Lake and the Cherkasskaya River, numerous cross-overs, driveways for agricultural machinery, animal crossings, local driveways and public highways.
After completion of the fifth phase, in four years, the travel time from the central part of Russia to the Black Sea coastline will be reduced, and the mobility of the population within the Rostov agglomeration will increase. The road traffic situation will improve in Rostov-on-Don, the administrative center of the Southern Federal District. This will have a positive impact on road-traffic safety in the region.
Now, the existing M-4 Highway is being reconstructed as part of the first two phases, including Salsk Ring Road traffic intersection. The total length of the reconstruction section is 17.1 km.
In May 2019, the works commenced at the third phase of Aksay bypass construction — a 12-kilometer long section from 1,024th to 1,036th km. As a part of the reconstruction, a cross-over will be built across Sovetskaya Street in Grushevskaya Village in Aksay District, as well as a bridge across the Tuzlov River in a forward direction to Krasnodar.
The Aksay bypass construction and reconstruction works are being performed within the framework of the Federal Project named "Communications Between the Centers of Economic Growth", which is a part of the Comprehensive Plan for Modernization and Expansion of Highway Infrastructure.
